Zeuge :: Maturation (Concrete Collage)

Zeuge’s Maturation, along with partnerships with Lokom, M.E.R.S, Romanowitch, and Fauna Modulara (aka fxbip), help navigate this jumble of fragmented audio data.

Concrete Collage’s ability to curate such vast sound structures is one of the best places to find completely abstract and experimental electronics. Zeuge’s Maturation, along with partnerships with Lokom, M.E.R.S, Romanowitch, and Fauna Modulara (aka fxbip), help navigate this jumble of fragmented audio data. “Disbanded” aptly captures these strange structures as it opens this release. On “Rat poison w/ Lokom,” a massive 4-minute behemoth of gritty bass thuds and synth swells, you can hear glitch and intricate sound design components bursting through the gaps. Tracks like “Undone” and “Eclaircissement” transport us back a few decades to a time when musicians like Quinoline Yellow and Lexaunculpt combined glitch and electro structures with remarkable ease.

Maturation might be seen as the ripening of the artist’s sonic skill and there are ups and downs throughout. With “Dissected w/ Romanowitch” providing sharper edges and “Sacred Chalice” providing muddier industrial blips and bleeps, it’s as if Zeuge (aka Dmitriy Reznikov) calls to the listener from several light years away. On “Denied w/ M.E.R.S,” glitch’n breaks take over the landscape with videogame soundtrack precision, as the modular excavation of “Transformations w/ Fauna Modulara” finishes the album, capping an otherwise abstract sonic journey that further establishes Concrete Collage’s wide range of audio-visual work.
