The whole collection is a sharp and perplexing journey across experimental terrain that’s a step ahead of itself.
Bass-heavy, dynamic ambient with an industrial touch
Yibai’s Hatch + Foster EP, summed up as “a 20 minute EP exploring the fields of bass-heavy, dynamic ambient with an industrial touch,” has a magnetic pull that we can’t seem to shake. The initial piece (“Hatch”) transitions from ethereal threads to low-frequency oscillations within these half-dozen swirling sonic segments, evoking a wistful dream of distant cascading drones. As the EP progresses, “Mass” displays a larger-than-life electrical windstorm of transparent noise, while “Breadth” finds further soundtrack motifs and off-kilter synth strands with an undulating low-end wobble deep in the background. All around the three-minute mark, these multidimensional tracks are rather condensed and impacted as “Foster” delivers off-kilter sparks sounding off with subtle glitches in the night. The whole collection is a sharp and perplexing journey across experimental terrain that’s a step ahead of itself.
