For a debut release, label owner Morgan Betz has initiated The Great Rubber Audio, a collection of tracks composed by Vytear (“Vy-Tare”) mostly written and recorded during Vytear’s stay in San Francisco from 2000-2002. G25 Productions is a relatively new label located in Brookline, MA whose mandate is to provide fine electronic music. You can’t really ask for more since Vytear’s full-length manages to surpass this statement treading more along the disconnected sounds of electro, funk and spastic drum’n bass outings.
You sure do get a wide variety of music on this disc, from mangled melodic thrusts to disjointed rhythms bouncing from one ear to the next. A dedicated combination of decomposed breaks are run through mud-infested basslines while the beats are much in tune with the likes of Squarepusher. As a whole, The Great Rubber Audio unfolds itself displaying Vytear’s ranging styles from MMT8/ADAT material all the way through to his early DSP days. This is evident in several cuts as you begin to see disfigured shapes rolling across the landscape during most of this album. With the amount of malnourished melodies, it’s clear that Vytear has a unique electro groove that casually manifests itself into other genre’s quite easily. Shifting from the frantic to the casual, Vytear simply can’t sit still.
The Great Rubber Audio slices a path through many styles, but one thing is certain: Funk remains the core ingredient. Even with the slight video-game influenced rhythms, a peculiar vibe is present inside each track leaving little room to lump Vytear into any one genre. With Warp Records’ own Plaid having played Vytear’s tracks, it’s safe to assume that G25 Productions is headed in the right direction. Definitely looking forward to future releases on this impressive label.
