Venderstrooik :: BAR04 (Bar)

This EP comes from the rented basement below the underground of electronic music. A 12” of cobbled sounds and off-kilter concepts that reject the norm, an anarchist glare coupled with a punk attitude. Mohawk wielding music that challenges from start to end.

Despite forming in 2005, Venderstrooik did not release until 2015. This refusal to follow the crowd is emblematic of this dutch triumvirate, especially when it comes to their music. A blend of dancefloor chicanery, DIY electronics and post punk this group have been building up a unique head of steam with their latest four track creation landing on Rotterdam’s Bar Records.

Trying to pin down what Venderstrooik are doing is quite difficult. “Espionage” is an example of their tumultuous sound. Around a tinny drumbeat and bass congregate a collection of shamanic like chants, languages colliding, pushing and jockeying for position in a piece that is entrancingly paranoid. Trying to reign in the unruly nature of the original, Pasiphae is up on remix duty. With appearances on Bio Rhythm and Artificial Dance the Greek artist and DJ beefs up percussion, adding a haunting melody and EBM intent to darken and reinvent. “Escargothic” drunkenly stumbles onto the floor of the flip. Staggering, glassy eyed with a pint sloppily dripping from a raised hand, the track is unsteady and uncertain. Keys plod, slipping out of tune to the mantra of “Techno Dance.” Sacha Mambo tried to put an semblance of sanity to the proceedings with his remix—Champignon Dans La Foret version tethers the original to some pillar of sanity, a kick and claps being a refuge from the attack of decaying samples of stuttering chords.
