There is something for everyone: acid, braindance, experimental electronics, IDM—even some slightly more downtempo numbers too.

Basted in DIY/grassroots etiquette

As users start to share their latest AI warfare playlists, on the flip we see the final Bandcamp Friday of 2021. Ahead of Igloo Magazines annual Best Of… there looks to be some last minute entries into the compilation releases. Returning with their second various artists showcase is X4 Records.

Featuring heavyweights and combining braindance collectives, the Barcelona-based label presents 20 tantalizing tracks from global artists who many have grown familiar with, yet still hold a shaded wisp of mystery over themselves.

As with all the compilations I review, anyone that takes the opportunity to enrich themselves with this much talent will surely come out the other side with many favorites. There is something for everyone: acid, braindance, experimental electronics, IDM—even some slightly more downtempo numbers too.

What I appreciate about this release is the community fundamentals, basted in DIY/grassroots etiquette—it is for the love, also the fun which translates across much of the music featured on this compilation. With a lineup this strong and with the harmonious sentiment we see with these semi-regular get-together, you would be hard done by to think of this as ‘just another comp.’ I already look forward to the next—is this an annual signal perhaps?
