A chaotic symbiosis of extraterrestrial electronics and flickering modular acrobatics
Errorgrid was founded in May 2020 and seeks to unearth blistering listening environments and dark electronics merged with ambient undertones. Their 9th release sees Max/MSP and modular synth sculptor Tom Hall and his 6-track Bestowed Order On Chaos extended player.
A ravaging assortment of glitch and raw noises, the opening track “Crossing Over” is infested with minuscule blips, bleeps and sporadic screeching sounds that somehow converge. I come to find out via the label operator that what we have here is a year’s worth of studio work which I find to be painstakingly arranged as complex electronic music from another dimension. Take “Linear Displacement Continuum Pt1 and its sibling Pt2—both venturing into otherworldly Richard Devine versus Autechre rhythms that bend, fold, collapse, and explode in all directions. The meticulous attention to detail can’t be ignored on these two tracks as they reveal the artists’ musical tapestry of blissful glitch extrusions. “Pre Code” takes on a more restrained trajectory of mysterious clicks’n cuts running parallel with dark ambient strains as “4TLZ280” furthers itself into organically stretched melodies while pitter-patter drums slither in the background. Closing with “1542,” Tom Hall unleashes hundreds of skittering beats that eventually slice through foggy echoes of dust and debris—brittle to the ears and refined like no other.
