Created as meditative sonic shifts, Moments In Time. is a strong album filled with three years of thoughtful staging. 2009 represents subtlety, 2010 reflects strain and 2011 reveals simplicity in all manner of sound structure.
Not entirely drenched in industrialized voids — as some might expect from a Scrap.edx side project — Josh Colella (aka The Carapace) emphasizes processed field recordings that are bent into three picturesque formations from 2009 through 2011. Often buried in echoed glitch, these curious oscillations are framed inside aquatic bass lines and mechanized rhythms to keep the blood circulating.
Ordered (and titled) by date, “08/02/2009” is the introductory track and sheds a style not too distant from The Detroit Escalator Company’s aesthetic; lightly brushed patches of beatwork tied to loosely woven ambient flutter. The aptly titled moniker, perhaps signifying the exoskeleton exposed on Moments In Time., creates a fluid experience that lowers you on new coordinates during every rotation.
“12/19/2009” offers a sleek look into the early 2000’s when labels like Toytronic, Merck, Neo Ouija (et al) flourished around melodious electronic foundations. 2010 must have been a difficult year as these particular tracks articulate themselves with a much more sliced’n diced pulse. Magnetic clips, darkened by emotive granules and sharp percussion has these three pieces creating a cyclic fog worth getting lost inside. 2011’s contributions offer a dubbier perspective of rhythmic industrial windstorms; both “03/06” and “06/29” filter through bass-laden twists and contortions to relieve the brain of any clutter prior to closing up.
Created as meditative sonic shifts, Moments In Time. is a strong album filled with three years of thoughtful staging. 2009 represents subtlety, 2010 reflects strain and 2011 reveals simplicity in all manner of sound structure. Easing the mind with an effective surplus of positive notes — both light and dark — these manipulated field recordings deliver new perspectives that are subjectively sublime; capturing moments in time with clarity.
Electronic music definitely needs an album like this to kick start the new year.
