Inspired by the birth of our universe with all its violence and beauty, chaos and calm, collisions and expansion, 1 mk2 is an exploration of sound that pulls the listener with its surrounding gravity.
While not much is known about Tangent (aka Robbert Kok and Ralph van Reijendam), this is their first proper release with Mindtrick Recordings. As the burgeoning imprint delves further into the recesses of abstract glitch and experimental audio science, they’ve further embedded their roster into a varied and utterly satisfying creative envelope. Such is the case for 1 mk2—a plethora of astronomical audio extrusions deliver a mechanical foray of post-industrial collisions between noise and melodious subatomic particles.
Each track is a slice of cosmic detail, broken into ten distinctive fragments that melt together. “Void” represents empty spaces, “Flux” ignites an evolving mash of percussive chemicals, “Vortex” lulls you into its cavernous spectrum, “Light of Life” delves into inspiring shards of piano-keyed beauty, “Antimatter” manipulates extraterrestrial echoes and disjointed noise, “Collision” signifies asteroids and their destructive orbit, “Infinite End” pushes further into an expanding universe of discovery, “Rebirth” is perhaps the sound of gases swirling outward after a Super Nova, “Friction” depicts the process of more than one object scrapping in opposite directions and “Birth” must be the nebulous environment in which stars are born.
In the end, what’s left to consume is a smattering of microscopic post-industrial sonic entities meant to be absorbed over and over again until each layer is revealed. Connected as a continuous melange of alien frequency tones, Tangent has crafted an exceptional album of intricate detail allowing the most visible of textures to fade into oblivion.
