The epicenter of deconstructed industrial electronics
The Healy brothers continue to scrape the edges of electronics. This time Paul Healy delivers the goods with Psychic Artillery presenting 13 tracks of crumpled mayhem. While the duo manage to craft brittle sound-escapes, it’s their ability to seamlessly merge industrial elements, fractured electro, and dissolve minimal extrusions, keeping them ahead of the pack.
“Versus Expectation” is a powerful opener that treads through synth blips and bleeps and rhythmic shadows lurking in the dark as “Fluid Fact” dismantles a cacophony of glitchy noise, acid, and breakcore slabs. Just about midway through, and “Retrograde Hypo Dreams” displays a stream of loosened data, ambient swells, and a dystopian soundtrack motif acting as a tethered piece to launch the second half of Psychic Artillery into sandblasted techno terrain where you’ll also find the title track simmer down only just slightly with its aggro beats and destructive hypnotic pulse.
And yet Paul Healy isn’t done dissecting these electrical slivers; “98 Milltir” provides an uneven balance between scorched industrial groove and Gescom-styled broken hip-hop shenanigans as closure “Act 2.6” delivers early Gridlock-era mechanical finesse and refined ambient soundscapes from a distant galaxy. Psychic Artillery is simply the epicenter of deconstructed industrial electronics, and it’s great to see this outfit continue to master it.
