Somatic Responses :: The Dogma of Function EP (Errorgrid)

An otherwise turbulent and top-notch collection from one of the pioneering duos in the corrosive electronic music field.

Flickering dark synth notes running at max capacity

True to form, the Wales-based Healy brothers return with a beat-infested avalanche of modular activity for burgeoning Lake Arrowhead-based Errorgrid. Hailing from a small industrial mining community, Somatic Responses have unearthed valuable mineral deposits packaged in this crunchy 6-track extended player.

The title track takes on a life of its own—the flickering dark synth notes running at max capacity are offset by hard-edged drums as “Visitors” pulls all the stops with its blistering Aphex Twin-esque braindance mayhem. What Somatic Responses is able to unleash and yet somehow keep under control are the melodic underpinnings each track possesses. As “Replicant Detection” delves in downtempo cybernetic warfare, there are subtle blips and fractured bleeps simmering next to melodic strands drifting in the background. Then you have the smoldering broken beats and tangled rhythm of “A11 x2Pla MD” that eventually shapeshifts into a technoid version of itself as its distant twin “Ymd31th10” relaxes in a cavernous void of glitchy extracts burning in a slow-motion audio inferno. “Virtual Faith” takes us into uncharted terrain with its metallic shards and dystopian dark-ambient flux that makes for a great closure to this otherwise turbulent and top-notch collection from one of the pioneering duos in the corrosive electronic machine music field.

Update: This release is now available on Somatic Responses’ Bandcamp as an extended version.
