Dreampty is a satisfying array of audio speed bumps that doesn’t veer too far into leftfield and fits snug between the alluring dynamics of previous Funckarma productions.
Roel Funcken rolls out the funck again for Eat Concrete, this time on a 10inch slab of wax—dreamy and empty just as depicted by the jellyfish cover-art courtesy of Timothée Mathelin. For the Dreampty extended player (which includes a bonus digital track), fidgeting digital dub blends around a maze of swirling percussive stabs—not unlike what Roel (and brother Don) do well as Funckarma. Rubbery rhythms flow throughout each slice and a cerebral quality emerges from behind the substructures. Though one can hear erratic yet cohesive electronics—as is usually the case with any Funcken work—ricocheting beats, blips and bass weave into and out of focus creating sublime frequencies from start to end. “Jeptic Une” offers rummaging synths and tangled high hats, “Dreampty” shivers its percussive pattern around flickering snips and snaps. Cyance’s “Demonic” is remixed via smudging bass and shimmering undertones and “Zink Blession” sheds its sparks of cacophonous beat’n bass as the bonus (“Spone”) breaks apart through minimized extractions left in dubspace. All in all, Dreampty is a satisfying array of audio speed bumps that doesn’t veer too far into leftfield and fits snug between the alluring dynamics of previous Funckarma productions.
