Six tracks spread over 27-minutes, here we see the prolific Amsterdam-based Roel Funcken (of Funckarma) continue to unravel a myriad of rhythms and melodic fissures as noted on the cinematic opener “Savareen,” where an semi-drum’n bass framework evolves, then breaks down, and builds itself up again. On the tranquilized “Nebula Messir,” time stands still, drifting notes flicker in the background, low-flying bass glides through miniscule percussive blips, and the entire arrangement feels like a lost soul finding its place in the universe. And this is essentially what Roel Funcken does so well—the connection between emotive melodic bursts of light that collide with rugged beats and bass offers a vast extraterrestrial soundscape. “Boytron Kovas”—featuring Recue—elicits a powerful interplay between glitched sound design and atmospheric downtempo architecture as the Generate remix of “Pykes Kessier” (from the Prester Hynn EP) is a sweet traverse across slippery drums and broken rhythmic weaving that draws you into its serene landscape. The title track is a wandering beast of audible delights—its balanced breaks and cinematic ambient stretch feels like it could last forever yet somehow only spans 215 seconds. “Thorn Cati” maneuvers across similar terrain, its acidic wash of rubbery bleeps and staccato rhythms is a signature move that doesn’t wear. In all, Semtinal Convex dips and dives through the outer realms, taking with it a snapshot of IDM, glitch, bass, ambient, downtempo, and textural frequencies with class.
