Rec_Overflow :: ZgZone EP (Mutoscope)

An authentically subtle and sophisticated extended player from one of the pioneers.

Rec_Overflow, a multitalented Madrid-based netlabel operator at Plataforma-LTW and active for over two decades with mostly spa.RK and Crazy Language, is still pushing the boundaries of electronic music. This time, it’s with Miguel Vázquez’s recently established Mutoscope imprint—also headquartered in Spain. Similar to Rec_Overflow’s trademark sound, ZgZone‘s music wrangles and twists a variety of acidic and experimental soundscapes, exploring six intense tracks, including one remix by Uf0.

During its quick five-minute excursion, “HereIam”‘s perplexing starting sound design structure deftly combines rolling bass rhythms, downtempo glitch percussion, and melodic strands. The song “Mamá te quiero,” which translates to “Mom, I love you,” is a heartfelt, upbeat, and genuine audio Polaroid that captures a poignant moment in time. The title track features acrobatic synth waves and braindance blips and bleeps, also not to be missed.

Rec_Overflow, one of the top practitioners in the scene, masterfully absorbs all facets of experimental electronics on ZgZone. Pieces like “Cierzo” offer punchy and elevated melodic shards that shine a bright light on positive vibrations, while Uf0 remixes the acidic funk breaks of “Japee,” shifting it into a nostalgic, frenzied, early Plone/Plod-like brittleness. An authentically subtle and sophisticated extended player from one of the pioneers.
