Here, in Spain, the Winters are pretty mild; in Madrid anyway. In Sweden they are that bit harsher, and last a fair bit longer. Muhk Music is willing to brave the Arctic winds with some smooth Techno sounds from Yanneck Salvo, aka Quarion.
The Swiss artist has proved himself on a number of imprints such as Drumpoet Community and his own Retreat. Yanneck has explored a range of styles, but House with a Disco and Funk undercurrent has been his mainstay. With its back catalog I was surprised to see Quarion on Muhk, but less surprised when I heard the title track. Electro is blended with melting Techno sounds for the glowing “Shale Gas.” Rich analogue chords spiral, Salvo winding lonesome bars amongst warm autumnal tones for an outstanding electronic epic. Chicago arrives with “Run That Shit (Guilty Pleasure 3.) Slow and grooving, lounging bass is blended meandering melodies for sweaty and late night piece. A screwy, warbling work of funk laden House closes. “Quicksand” bends and bulges in slow rhythmic patterns to close the three tracker.
The title track is the stand out piece of the 12”, deep and harmonic, it harks back to the days of Stasis and Beaumont Hannant. The two B-Side tracks have their merits, but have a hard time competing with the title piece which just outshines all. A quality EP that shows a different side to the Quarion sound.
Shale Gas is available on Muhk.
