[Release page] Qebrus is an interesting project to say the least. After a recent stint with Bedroom Research on the Exophobia album described as “gelatinous beat crunching rhythms that consistently scrape against the grain,” the sound manipulator is back in full swing with a self-released collection of decomposing electronics in the form of the ⊶⊑∷⌊∴⊹∵⌉∷⊒⊷ E_P.
While an extended player in terms of breadth of tracks, Qebrus aligns the entire lot with very few tools, and it can be heard throughout this release. But as much as these ears try to explain the extraterrestrial audio scribbles—much in line with Richard Devine’s Risp EP (Detroit Underground, 2011)—there’s very little in terms of an emotional pull. Instead we’re treated to an onslaught of data snippets bouncing around the thud and thump of torched beats and Autechrean moods—imagine a less involved Confield landscape. Perhaps intended to annoy the neighbors’ kids with its aggressive 100 mph pulse and fuzzy bass bin squabbles, Qebrus’ sound is repetitive on these slices of electricity. Bending and altering similar tones throughout, time shifts in atonal algorithms, almost intentionally set as a series of experiments that feed off each other. These distorted results, alien scrips and outer solar-system frequencies may not attract earthlings seeking a more emotive escape. Instead, a mechanical consortium of distracting beats and bass keeps the flow intact. Intentionally confused and unintentionally balanced—might this have been the goal?
