Inspired by Iceland’s wild and resilient flora, one can’t help but imagine how quiet sounds drift effortlessly across its boundless, cold reaches. Though I’ve yet to set foot there, the thought of it lingers like a distant memory waiting to unfold. On Ljóstillífun, an eight-part suite, Pan Thorarensen delves into shadowed ambient terrain and hauntological echoes, where moments flicker and dissolve in constant motion.
Fragments of found audio, organic instrumentation, and faint vocal traces surface and recede, each passage pulsing with gentle momentum—an understated rhythm drawn from the land’s living core. Light breezes thread through elongated tones that seem to nest within the mind, conjuring sonic impressions that feel intrinsically connected to soil, moss, and stone.

A key figure in Iceland’s electronic music scene, Pan Thorarensen is widely respected for his artistic contributions. Fifteen years ago, he founded and has since organized Extreme Chill, an annual electronic music festival that attracts both local and international electronic music enthusiasts, drawing them into the ethereal embrace of Iceland’s natural beauty.
