Emotive machine music with inspiration
The return on Nurmad Jusat last year was a bright spot in an otherwise bleak twelve months. The founder of Likemind, the artist behind the evocative techno of Fugue and Nuron, was back after a twenty-five plus year hiatus. The magic that characterized Jusat’s music was rekindled on La Source, emotive machine music with inspiration being added but from none other than Kirk Degiorgio. A new year has come round and, thankfully, De:tuned are once again bringing good tidings.
La Source 02 follows the same format as its predecessor, three tracks with Degiorgio appearing as a remixer this time under his As One alias. Off-kilter beats are the foundation from which soft swirls of sound unfurl in the warming “Burnenville.” A soundtrack to a Summer rain-shower, the piece is delicate, elegant and refreshing. “Holowell” is cut from a similarly understated cloth. Drum patterns are restless, yet completely unimposing. Strings float, gently traversing their way past cascading notes in this masterclass of ambient techno. The flip is dedicated to the As One remix of “La Source” with the British pioneer doing the original proud. An acid brushed bassline is the fertile ground from which springs an assortment of audio delights. Jittering hi-hats flex and flutter above a somewhat steady kick while silken keys soar skyward.
