Nimh :: Black Silences (Naked Lunch)

Newly launched independent label based in Italy Naked Lunch Records is a an other fine purveyor of now legendary industrial power electronic acts (Maurizio Bianchi…) and challenging contemporary artists in the field of abstract and noisy drone ambient. It sounds quite natural that Giuseppe Verticchio, mastermind of Nimh found a warm welcome there. With a quite singular, eclectic and dense musical production that goes from thrilling cinematic calmscapes, to ritualistic looped ambient and post-industrial drone artifacts distributed internationally (Silentes, Eibon, Rage in Eden et al.)

Nimh figures among the uncompromising icons of Italian experimental music. Despite it saw the light quite recently this album has been recorded around 2010/2011. Chronologically it is made of unreleased materials when the project was still signed by Silentes Minimal Editions and turned to its distinctive ethno-ritual sound mappings (Krungthep Archives.) This new album has a specific charm and flavor in Giuseppe’s fruitful musical trajectory. According to me it is without any doubt the most minimalist-drenched drone album of the whole discography. The equipment is reduced to its minimum and simply based on electric guitar chords and various electronic treatments. Each track is composed around a similar stylistic schema. Super distorted drone guitars and abrasive textures are slowly moving and resonate in a rather epic, dramatic and ecstatic style. The sound aesthetics remind me of transcendental noise acts from Troum, the buzzing droned out doomscapes of Expo 70 and the post-rock atmospherics of Tim Hecker.

A relevant and seriously moody noise ambient album where guitar-orientated black noises are melted with foggy and melodiously shimmering fragments. A menacing, harsh, intrusive, nihilist and emotionally disturbing noisescapey experience which is well recommended.

Black Silences is available on Naked Lunch.
