Maps and Diagrams :: A Study of Ends or Purpose (Handstitched*)

What I hear are experimental, textured soundscapes, multilayered fusions of digital and analog techniques, sparse haunting keyboards and atmospheres, nineteen tracks of curious things to hear mostly in slow motion, sparkling in a strange light that is always changing.

Creating a place of introspection and reconnection

A map is a compact visual way of describing a physical location, to aid in navigation. A diagram is a visual expression of an idea, to illustrate a description in some way. This collection from maps and diagrams is dreamy and restful, the moment is important but the key is practicing the method of creating these sounds, navigating to the right spot. The feeling suggests that this music is infinite, rather than a traditional approach that is broadcast media format friendly. The musical craft of  A Study of Ends or Purpose is focusing towards sound design and fluidity, creating a place of introspection and reconnection.

What I hear are experimental, textured soundscapes, multilayered fusions of digital and analog techniques, sparse haunting keyboards and atmospheres, nineteen tracks of curious things to hear mostly in slow motion, sparkling in a strange light that is always changing.

I am on a very small boat way out in the calm water. The feeling is almost becalmed in a fog at night. For me the temperature is perfect and there is forward motion, very slow and dreamy, listening is restful and comfortable, there is no hurry. Hidden in the  atmosphere are always lots of new ideas and textures to float along inside of. In short, it’s nice to be here.

The mood of the program makes this prime sleep material, the smooth flow from track to track is perfect. Now, as the music allows a sense of slowing time way down… well, here we go! “flock” (3:09) lonely “halftone” (3:57) emerging softly “erbe” (3:38) a garden of slow mystery “quartile” (2:03) under slow shadows “ceilings” (2:39) slow rising essence “agium” (6:25)  amphibious growling that morphs into slow ringing shadows “teleology” (1:05) an odd rhythmic cadence “upland” (3:46) dancing with the night insects “bringtide” (2:59) boating in the dreamtime “traverse” (4:47) carroselle lights at night in the ranging distance “stadia” (5:15) lights in the night sky “abridge” (1:54) careful progress crossing over “brume” (5:49) expanding a cold short winter day “earthshine” (2:50) impossible from here “offshore” (7:33) an orchestra of slow tones “raindrop” (5:36) detail study resolves in a granular way “charas” (5:48) fuligin spreading while the warm feelings glow now I am wondering about the Persian word for a specially shaped piece of leather, loving the tola “ambit” (4:36) darkness has no boundaries “slopewater” (4:07) slow ghosts ending underwater again.

So that was the audio component. The real art exists in combination with the visual presentation. In the old days, everything was manufactured by the thousands, hundreds of thousands, you had your choice and they all look exactly alike. Now, the one of a kind quality of someone creating the physical experience is revolutionizing the artist-listener relationship. The artist presents a listening experience within a very unique visual and tactile dimension rarely seen before these times. What you get is the specially designed one of a kind packaging, in either CD or cassette form, plus the sound.

There is a set of ten special edition prints that come with the CD version, which takes the whole one of a kind concept to a different level. Handstiched* products are not intended to satisfy the quest for moving thousands of units, I love that the new tools (which are the old tools) can be used to simply create new kinds of value. The measurement of success for the end result is finding less than one hundred eager collectors of these new releases. Anybody can listen through your streaming format of choice, what I am saying is that the synergy of physical art forms have opened up a new epoch in human expression. The opposite (and maybe the antidote) of mass production is one of a kind production. The new idea is faster than the old problem with the right scaling.

A Study of Ends or Purpose is strictly limited to 40 [CD] and 50 [cassette] issues.
