In a swell of tension from the surrounding currents
Experimental sound artist and Flaming Pines label head Kate Carr creates natural soundscapes within abstract tones in this ominous one take live performance fake creek. Taking prior knowledge from recording waterways, Kate Carr re-imagines these archival experiences with additional drones and characterized signals that contain a sense of dread. This creek is desolate, but a presence can be felt—more often than not your own heart beat tempts you into thinking you have heard a footstep from a shadow.
This piece contains no actual field recordings. All sounds are made using the objects listed, incorporating: a tub of water, a straw, nails, beads, bird horns, a whisk, steel wool, a small branch, rocks, a hollow log, a small drum and a zither. This foray is exquisite in foley practice and sound design layering. Carrying cinematic qualities it is easy to get swept into this atmosphere and find yourself in a swell of tension from the surrounding currents.
Carr regularly performs throughout the UK and Europe, with recent performances taking place at the Tate Modern, Whitechapel Gallery, Cafe Oto, Instants Chavires (Paris) and AB Salon (Brussels).
Aside from Flaming Pines, her music can be found on the labels Helen Scarsdale (US), Hasana Editions (Indonesia), Rivertones (UK), Soft (France), Longform Editions (Australia), and Galaverna (Italy).
