This isn’t hard minimal electro, or breakbeat material, it is electro with subtle hints of techno and elements of house in the mix… an EP of hazy house and subdued electro, with some 303 undertones thrown in for good measure.
Following up from ArD2’s download album, 2084, Frigio Records are going back to wax. The three tracker is the latest from the hand of label boss Juanpablo. Last time the Iberian imprint drafted in Heinrich Mueller, aka Dopplereffekt, to add his clinical kick to things on ArD2’s 2084 The Mixes. This time Frigio have asked the modern house master James T. Cotton to employ his services as remixer, which he has willfully accepted for the new EP Dream.
“Dream” featuring ArD2 opens the 12” proceedings. The track lives up to its name, having a tone of twilight electronics throughout. The break introduces hazy house beats, with the soporific synth drowsily shimmering in the background to create a layered work. “Midas Land” follows and opens up the industrial cabinet with its reverberated beats and muted notes. Josh Werner lends his vocals to the piece, as he has done for Traxx , to add another element as synth stabs build on the mechanised beats. The b-side is dedicated to J.T.C.’s retooling of “Dream” (audio stream below). The remix is true to the original and sees Mr. Cotton in a much more laid back mood in comparison to some of his more jacking pieces. The house beat is there, but the acid strings are sheathed to a melodic sub-line. Instead Cotton created his own dreamlike version, with rich chord rippling across the subtle snare.
The more records from Frigio I hear the more I like the label. It is releasing on the electro slant, but it is electro in a loose definition. This isn’t hard minimal electro, or breakbeat material, it is electro with subtle hints of techno and elements of house in the mix. Dream is an EP of hazy house and subdued electro, with some 303 undertones thrown in for good measure. This is one of the few Spanish labels pioneering electronics at the moment, but it is definitely hitting up there with the heavyweights.
Dream EP is out now on Frigio.
