An ebb and flow of solitude, serenity and idyllic vistas are wrapped in sheets of low-rolling sonic emissions, strings and analog manipulations.
Ion Driver (aka So-Cal resident Dennis Bunton) returns with a half-dozen slices of audio maneuvers in the form of Momentary Abstractions EP with Nor-Cal’s purveyors of fine electronics—Addictech. After the success of Waves (Addictech, 2011), it’s clear that Ion Driver has continued to hone his skills in a dynamic and enlightening way. Presenting downtempo electro via “Lighten Up,” brokenbeat synth work and vocodered Kraftwerk layering on “re:Fresh” as well as ambient tonal shifts on “Bednight.” Tranquilized guitars are reflected on “High Noon”—a light strumming of strings frolic against a panoramic backdrop. “LaaLaa” is a fusion of tribal nostalgia and appears as a bonus track.
As these pulses of light refract into rhythmic simplicity, Ion Driver’s knack for elevating minimalist leftfield electronics is both energetic and uplifting. Slices of weaving basslines—akin to the early works of edIT and Telfon Tel Aviv—rest themselves on elegant melodics and instrumental textures. An ebb and flow of solitude, serenity and idyllic vistas are wrapped in sheets of low-rolling sonic emissions, strings and analog manipulations. Momentary Abstractions literally is just that, a surplus of minimized electronic delights for the subconscious.
