Phokusd is a concentrated collection of smothered audio works detailing some of the finest experimental electronic music that doesn’t overstay its welcome and constantly exudes top-notch production values front to back.

Inkipak’s staggering production and clever connections to nostalgic electronica realms are well known to most of us in the IDM “scene“—simply check out his recordings on Ping Discs, Mighty Force, Touched Music, Glawiip Music, Móatún 7, and Wave Function, to mention a few. Phokusd, an eight-track suite released on his own Inkitrax imprint and featuring characteristic breaks, bass, and bubbling melodic-techno rhythms, is another example of Jon Mace’s focused sonic trajectory. As a result, it’s always difficult not to be fully absorbed with these saccharine slices of life that take us way back—and forth.

Consider the more subdued ambient-electronica of “Reach,” the shuffling pseudo-drill’n bass mechanics of “Pihkal,”—casting a parallel path with Photek’s earlier tracks—the blistered breakbeats and swirling kaleidoscope movements of “Dusk,” the grooving acid-funk of “Tongue Tied” and closing piece “Epheron,” both reminiscent of classic Global Goon.

In the end, Phokusd is a concentrated collection of smothered audio works detailing some of the finest experimental electronic music that doesn’t overstay its welcome and constantly exudes top-notch production values front to back.
