Another mysterious modular monument to unravel

Tagged as a companion EP to the Carney Impost release from early 2020, prep_ mins_ offers more subdued and tranquil modular fizz-fuzz acrobatics and crisp atmospheres front to back. One can’t help but to simply absorb the downtempo rhythm of “pander framing” that, while packed with microscopic bits and bobbles, also ventures into emotive/melodic terrain ever so slightly. And just as these abstract sonic tentacles begin to unfold, tracks like “munge” (clocking in at almost 12-minutes) tend to steer into hypnotically drenched loops—its modular meltdown follows an electroacoustic path. With the plethora of found sounds, disjointed bleeps and mangled Subotnick-like clangs (ref. “omnimod”), prep_mins_ sheds light on calmer tones while carefully exposing its experimental arch. “slowslap” could have very well been culled from Autechre’s elseq 1–5 (Warp, 2016) sans textural haze—although the self-deprecating “aimless_oog” (a hidden bonus track) hints at otherworldly soundscapes and is utterly consuming. As “panx_re” (yet another bonus) delves through semi-industrial landscapes, there’s an undulating contour that can’t be ignored—one that is seemingly improvised and composed at random, its ghostly shadows expand and contract as does most of Ignatius’ audio sculpting. prep_mins_ is unsurprisingly on-point and yet another mysterious modular monument to unravel.
