Stretching experimental snaps, buzzing and a folk persona, most of Repeating Myself Remix (this package being an extension to its camouflaged post-rock / exp-folk counterpart, Repeating Myself) is a buffet of genre-bending acrobatics. A dose of guitar plucks, pinches of electrical noodling and a slice of atmosphere blends with subtle nuances resting on down filled pillows. But it’s not all fluff; this curiously prolific Japan-based imprint has established a reputation for unleashing left-of-center pseudo-electronic audio with world-renowned musicians while keeping an aesoteric point of view.
And so, with this compiled selection of reinterpretations comes a peculiar aftertaste. At first spin, some of the tracks tend to alienate the ears, taking you through a fuzzy environment filled with rusty instruments and dusty computers. It wasn’t until months after its release that repeated listens began to yield an unhinged plateau of uniformity. All of the above-mentioned genre extracts become crystalized and dispersed evenly from start to finish. Like a 5000 piece puzzle tossed into the air, each shape interlocks with each other, after colliding, forming a panoramic picture of strangely synergized pulses. Perhaps more attention should have been had the first time around?
Without knowing the true players behind the Hopeless Local Marching Band moniker, this could be the reason behind the outfits allure. Its post-rock exterior is nicely housed in this remix collection. Not quite electronic, not quite instrumental; it’s all of the above and unusually interesting.
