On the heels of his excellent album Grunt (DPSR, 2018), Derek Piotr releases the Repeating Bloom EP (DPSR) remix collection. Sourced from the track “Repeating Bloom” off of Grunt, it’s an EP bringing together tracks that decompose and repurpose one of Grunt’s few repetitive rhythmic compositions. Contributors include Simon Whetham, Elsa Hewitt, STEEEZO “EEE” and Chaircrusher. Each provides their own uniquely compelling reinterpretation of “Repeating Bloom’s” pulsations and buzzes. Hewitt transforms the piece into ambient hypnotism, all clockwork percussion and gorgeously breathy murmurs. The drilling percussion and twinkling textures of STEEEZO “EEE”’s remix evoke several late-90s Aphex Twin tracks being played simultaneously, while Simon Whetham spins the original’s backing textures into a vivid frequency-rich focal point. Chaircrusher’s shuffling techno offers the most immediately accessible take on the source material—listen to the stream here. And as a bonus the EP also includes a remix of Grunt track “Let” by MA-based producer Reuben Walton.
Repeating Bloom is available on DPSR January 25, 2019.
