Amorphous drones and processed field recordings

Imbued by northern mythologies, holy path to timelessness in spiritual, affective communion with mother earth, Bryan Hilyard figures among regular sound artists to be invited by Cryo Chamber. Even if I’m quite familiar with this imprints’ back catalog it is the first time I approach his music. Hilyard’s music navigates a convincing line between transportive space ambient, amorphous drones and processed field recordings that turn you in an intimate state of inner tranquility, mentally inducing a tranced-out posture. Without being completely innovative or challenging Division Cycle casts a gently moving, undulating and at times an eerie cinematic score that constantly guides the listener in a vast array of layered sounds, micro noises, metallic reverbs and concrete interferences. The result is dense, warm, sometimes visceral and levitating, like enlightened by a soft feeling of wonder and beauty. What convinces me the most in this eruptive wall of sounds is the organic way things are built up together, which in way diverges from many generic and lame plastic sounding ambient releases that alternate this musical micro genre. Not a crucial record for me, but highly recommended for fans of good quality ambient music with a sincere compositional identity and a subtle darkly facet.
