(01.27.06) Shortly after Passarani’s Sullen Look here’s another export from my country (Italy). Still much influenced by the 80’s, Francisco is definitely more disco oriented than electro, as you can instantly hear in “Big Love:” fast four-to-the-floor beats, elastic bassline and vintage synths, a combination that will be the main theme throughout Music Business.

“Malinco” is more funky, based on a simple beat and conga percussions, dominated by baroque synth solos. Actually, the only things that bores me a bit about this record is the excessive amount of synth arrangement in some tracks, “Moon Roller” is ok, but it gets sugary after a while and “Fits” sounds a bit repetitive. Tunes like “Disco Way” instead are simply perfect and charming, with little elements of melody in the background in favour of a massive, bouncy bassline that after a straight start evolves in an epic chord shifting. There’s some serious hit-single tunage in here, “Esplanade 97” features skillful and catchy vocals by Adam Bourke over a killer beat, thunderous bass and evocative whirling horror flick sounds. “80voglia” sounds instead too retrò for my taste, after all the title it’s a pun (in Italian) that means I am dying for (the 80s). “Ultimo” (translation: “Last One”) is indeed the last melancholic groove of Music Business before “Soul Song” farewells with a long fading.

Disco revival is surely not my usual cup of tea, but this record is probably the right one if I had to choose one of the genre. Effective rhythms and a direct party attitude are what I appreciate in Francisco’s music, I prefer his sound than, let’s say, Metro Area or Kerrier District just to name a few. A nice feature of Music Business is that the artwork, once unfolded, reveals a role play game named after the record, where you have to complete your mission that consists in reaching number 1 in the charts. Very nice addition, but I would recommend to buy the vinyl for a comfortable board.
