Sweet ambient electronica
Fragile X’s music is a delightful discovery, as demonstrated by Halcyon Maze in particular with Iceland’s prolific IDM, electro, and techno imprint Intellitronic Bubble—founded by friends and collaborators Metamatics (Lee Norris) and Futuregrapher (Árni Grétar). Maybe it’s the delicately woven melodies or the synaptic beats pummeling our brain. Perhaps what keeps us consumed are the off-center rhythms and shifting dynamics he manages to produce within each piece.
On “Hanging By A Thread,” the fittingly named composition combines a mesmerizing blend of half-sliced beats, exp-electronics, and a diverting melody line that finally emerges near its closing minutes. In “Oneirataxia,” the percussion intensifies as machined synth pulses take off on a futuristic breaks/electro journey, while in “At The Center Of A Tension,” the darker tones give way to lighter ones, making for a surreal soundtrack moment and an encapsulating technoid vision. “The Colour Of Secrets” is a melancholic yet uplifting slice of life that leaves us hankering for more—it bookends Halcyon Maze with sweet ambient electronica and a nostalgic image of bygone days. Drifting in the audio void, indeed.
