Abflug is a new label from Finland and Formatt’s Connections EP is the first release on this label. Formatt also has other previous releases on imprints like Corewatch, Grain of Sound, Robo, Stasisfield. Thhe Connections EP is another gem from Formatt, perhaps his best work to date and definitely the most obvious dub oriented music we’ve heard from Peter (based in Belgium).
There are 6 tracks with lots of crackle sounds combined with very clever and warm bass tones and strange yet relaxed melancholic ambiences in the background. The music is not placed completely in the shadows, but it’s very much on the surface and at the same time very intriguing. Connections is made of carefully designed and balanced dub-flowing sound textures. With its 23 and a half minutes of instrumental music, this EP is an urban experimental microscopic dub soundscape; drifting airy music that’s like an endless wave of minimal abstractions. But of course, it’s dub in context of contemporary electronic music.
Connections ends with the Remote Mix version of the amazing track called “Glazed”, which will be released in it’s original version on the second forthcoming compilation on Japan’s Saag Record Label. The original version of “Glazed” is fantastic –not much different from the mixed version, but a little more calmed down this time around.
