Fleck E.S.C. (aka Franck Collin) doesn’t require any introduction. The established French electronic music producer, based in Tokyo, Japan, continues to refine his craft, delivering futuristic modular electro with a sprinkling of techno and braindance elements. For his Upgrader EP on Canada’s consistent Woodwork imprint, roughed glitch’n blips flow on opener “Never Stop” with gripping vocoder lyrics as the fidgeting Drexciya-inspired bass-thuds of “Prosthesist” provide enough fuel to circle the planet. And this is really where Fleck E.S.C. shines—his use of raw electro-nics and old-school textures never seem to fade. On the title track, a bleep techno extraction unfolds with buzzing acid smudges while closer “Desinterest” dives into syncopated low-end grooves filled with punctuated beatwork that simply breaks apart near its ending. An impressive and on-point abstract electro EP that simply doesn’t let up.
