You can see things come and go, slowly, your ears filtering a view into the past, but all there is to claim contains only a mirage and fog. Keep watching a landscape that never seems to change but it probably does.
A dream that repeats never finding an explanation
Imagine trails that lead into the distance, as you go you are finding clues and pausing to unwind and sort things out. The feeling is always so peaceful and slow. I will try to make a larger story to fit it all in, then I will give up and simply enjoy the scattered fragments. You are mixed within sustained drifting tones and textures. You can see things come and go, slowly, your ears filtering a view into the past, but all there is to claim contains only a mirage and fog. Keep watching a landscape that never seems to change but it probably does. “Look” (5:59) back and forth, whirling slowly I hear repeating drone patterns full of small details that beckon and hide.
The second track, “Corners” (5:09) gives a strange call and answer feeling, taking small steps and a slow gaze. In the dark basement stairs wait, grasp for the “Curves” (3:00) deep in the water with shadows. I hear repeating melodic phrase fragments. All is “Falling” (5:15) now rising. Now slowing. I dream of decorative echoes and detected motion, this is a dream that repeats never finding an explanation, laden with more drama bits that dissolve.
“Retrieve” (4:26) takes me back and forth, like breathing. All I hear is grey and umber, until something new buzzes nearby and fades, then returns briefly. “Rise” (6:00) into a percussive wooden pattern, a clunk pulse. I am swaying. I hear that drone. Now I am stirring slightly and turning to re-dream, the tone fragments linger. Perhaps this one has more details than the other tracks so far. Take the “Slide” (4:04), aim for the opening as it goes past.
Laden with more drama bits that dissolve ::
Are these alien machines that stumble and signal questions? I think they are questions, only by the glissando tone, wait, now there is more light. I think that some of the details are somewhat densely crowded in places, easing out “Between” (2:57) where the orchestra stirs and begins to emerge but stays hidden, and the gentle chaos and progression. I think I hear whispered tones.
Take some keyboard tones and test the surface, to see if there is something becoming ready to pop through the “Opening” (6:00). Somewhere there are old notebooks and I imagine them each to be filled with floating fragments that linger, a scrapbook of moments so lost that any new explanations you might have will probably fit better now. I don’t know. The final track, the one that lingers in our ears, it morphs and echoes, “Petals” (5:02) are fluttering. There are bigger pieces that seem solid for a moment, and rolling echoes, and then it is gone and nothing is there now.
Paths is the second album I made as Fields We Found and I am so pleased it is now seeing the light of day. Recorded in 2021 and exploring the routes we all choose and where those decisions take us. Intuition and a common sense of togetherness. It is a view into the past – where I was at the time, musically and personally. Made in the same studio as all my music – looking out over the countryside and allowing it to influence the pace and textures of the music. All tracks performed and recorded straight to tape using an analogue modular system, Ensoniq mirage, Isla instruments s2400 and various fx and tape machines. ~Bandcamp
