Fans interested in the moody/beat-centric substructures from musicians such as Einoma, Autechre, and Richard Devine will revel in this cross-pollinated auditory manifest.
Written by Jeroen Bax (aka exm) and Tam Ferrans (aka Section 27 label head), the pairing on I/0 DISC is simply baffling. Four tracks slid across 38-minutes, both sonic craftsmen inhabit another galaxy. The haze, beat-infested, Autechrean soil that is unearthed is filled to the brim with low-end synth noodling manipulated to infinitesimal extents.
Lumping this extended player in the sound-design realm may be fitting, but it’s more than a mere genre pigeonhole. Both musicians stretch and contort each microscopic sound with ease and control—”01 00-I-0(I)” does so with 10-minutes of unfettered experimental electronic bliss. The shuffling and detuned bass, beats, and rugged distortion, creates an atmosphere to get lost within. “00-I/0(II),” on the other hand, carries with it a hefty dosage of looping drones, muted rhythm bursts, and turbulent modular escapism. A soundtrack envelop is pushed to the extremes—both sculptors exhibit musical focus and corrosive sound-effects to the nth degree, “00-0/I(I)” coming across as a distant cousin to “00-I/0(II).” The distilled industrial mayhem featured on the closing “00-0/I(II)” is shortest of the bunch with a runtime of 7:50, however, it is perhaps the darkest themed execution start to end. The cascading, robust, and chiseled drums on this piece alone is enough to wreak havoc on the ears as it transports the listener to a whole other plateau.
