Ephemeral Nature caps three superb years with a superb three tracker, a track to celebrate each year of this quality New York label.
Maybe it’s me, but there seems to be more and more music coming out of late. I know there are high points and low points in the releasing season but 2014, to date, seems to have been high on high. Techno. House. Electro. Synth. Ever conceivable genre has been well represented to date as electronic labels dish out the vinyl goods. Combining a cross section of the above sounds is the latest from New York’s Sequencias. JM De Frias’ imprint began with a various artists 12”, and it returns to that founding format for its tenth release, Ephemeral Nature.
Label veteran Metropolis is back in New York to offer the machine mesmerism of “Balefire.” Oscillations bubble and bend against the analogue curves and culminations of Nick Lapien. Shawn O Sullivan of Led Er Est fame arrives with “Corpypha.” O’Sullivan has been honing his Techno skills on imprints like W.T. Records and The Corner. The Brooklyn based musician leads in with some serious nostalgic 90s pulsations, you’d be forgiven for thinking Altern8 were warming up. But what unfolds is far from heavy banging gasmask material. Instead a soft and inviting warmth is unveiled, a brittle creation with a tough streak running through it. A deep current drifts across the EP, a lush and textured theme sweeping through sublte snares and considered cymbals. Switzerland’s Echo 106 close the 12” with “Withered Leaves.” The Schnueriger brothers have been quiet since their switchblade sewn on Lux Rec, but return to releasing form with mellower Chicago moments. Acid lines are turns and folded, claps shuddering under arcing synth.
Sequencias has served up some very special records over its ten release life span. Jamal Moss. Willie Burns. D’Marc Cantu. Just some of the machine men who have graced the imprint.
