A swift adventure with beats in the style of Brothomstates or Gescom
It’s another new label for me—this time on MOZYK.NET with a group of seven tracks released by Enabl.ed (aka New York-based Jimmy Batista), titled OddlyMerged. A pleasant release of relatively-downtempo, noninvasive pieces that flow nicely and won’t introduce any stress into your day. Plenty of the tracks evoke memories of enjoyable works from my past, the opener “No Results” is almost Global Goon-like and there’s some welcome Harpsichord in the vein of Arovane present in “Invalid Spark,” the latter of which really grounds this release in some solid early 2000s production techniques.
The outro track namesake of the album further delves into these techniques, with a strong display of tap-delays and a breakdown containing structured beats in the style of Brothomstates or Gescom.
Most enjoyable to me here is the use of breakdowns in the tracks, more often than not as a finalization of a track but they know where to put them and they know how to complement what’s come before it—the positive outlook of “Idlescar” juxtaposed by its glitchy ending, and the playfulness of “Slowbursts” being solidified by the constant pad of its second half.
Although there’s nothing groundbreaking present and the pieces are all pretty short—making for a swift adventure—there’s clear ability with a consistent structure, not only within tracks but also between them. Given they were all developed specifically with each other in mind, this isn’t anything of a surprise but does leave me wondering if there was a missed opportunity here for some mixed tracks for a continuous release.
