An analogous downtempo and dub-laden slow roller
Where Ryan Taylor (aka Eldorado Omega) previously dived head-first into dark(er) ambient terrain, he’s now flipped the equation in a manner of speaking. With Beatkits we see the Atlanta-based producer opening his modular machines with expressive, downbeat rhythms slithering all around us with an edgy quirkiness (ref. “pentatonymous login” for example).
There are bouncing bits’n pieces and all kinds of funky beatwork happening on this self release—hence the title, perhaps? And even though I keep reading the title as Beatniks, which would still apply, Eldorado Omega is onto something solid with Beatkits. On the downtrodden highlight “DRUNKTAnk,” Eldorado Omega shifts into low gear with rolling rhythms and corrosive drums that even Gescom might easily digest in a casual jam session. And this is really where Eldorado Omega stands out: the use of percussion, be it slow-moving or a flickering pulse, to the eerie and sometimes warped melodies (ref. “What is the question”), creates a sweet audible illusion. A sort of hypnotic treasure trove of textured musical layers continue to reveal themselves with each listen.
Tracks like “TekkerDelekker” bust open with raw electro energies as its blips’n bleeps get tucked away just beneath a heavy bass line. The acidic warbling of “Tintinabulatrix” delivers hard-edged electronics and rugged breaks (video clip below) as “That Drip” scrapes by with lively half-drums and analog buzzing low-end acid dripping, so to speak. “Falls like water” manipulates its pitter-patter groove with Subotnik-like synthesizer symphonies as Beatkits simply oozes with abstract electronic triangulation. With the ultra relaxed closure “One day this will all be over,” one can only hope this is the case considering what our pale blue dot and its inhabitants are going through.
A welcomed return to form, Eldorado Omega crafts an analogous downtempo and dub-laden slow roller worth relaxing to while we look out our windows. Both brimming with life and at times meandering, Beatkits is a well crafted sonic assortment during these trying times.
