Echaskech :: Certainty of Tides EP (Self-Released)

It seems like just yesterday that we dialed into Origin (Just Music, 2014), described as “majestic sound-escapes which evolve into fully-formed canvasses.” Well, this EP isn’t too far off from that description. Echaskech‘s Certainty of Tides—a behemoth of electronic, dub, glitch ‘n bass and synthesized musical bliss seamlessly morphs into a splendid sonic detour of sound and vision.

Extended Players used to signify that an album was in the works and imminent. Dom Hoare and Andy Gillham continue to tease, this time on the brisk and powerful Certainty of Tides. It’s been three EP’s since Origin, but is this yet another introduction to a full length in the works? Let’s hope so.

“Kochan” opens with slowly simmering bass, chilled, crisp sound design, and an emotive vocal lament traversing a rhythmic glitch landscape. The title track is a more technoid discovery; synth notes and clicks mixed into a female vocal chorus; its dance-floor laden coherency also works well in a solo listening environment. “Round of Ten” delivers further digitized sine-waves, ultra low-end activity, lightly drenched vocal hues and old-school—think Warp’s 90s-era Artificial Intelligence series—smoldering electronics and keys. “Equal Eye” maneuvers an electro-infused maelstrom, structured jingle and darker energies flickering above an echoed groove.

In the end Certainty of Tides is an accomplished slice of audio work that bends, twists and distorts in all the right ways, enough to quench your thirst and wonder what’s next for the London-based duo.

Certainty of Tides is available on Bandcamp.
