Elongated drones, tones and subdued pulses take center stage on Distance: Sounds for an Empty Space, and as the title of this compilation clearly describes, the soundscapes offered by these 10 musicians fills the “empty space” where no perceivable objects, distractions, or tangible endpoints are in site. The floating, drifting, and ambient time capsules revealed here only further solidifies the fact that sound transcends time, or is it the other way around? Nonetheless, the outward sonic bubbles found on this compilation are so infinitesimal and barely perceivable, that the result is what the Sydney-based imprint refers to as “blending noise and meditation in equal measure.”

Diving into the “noise” element, one has to wonder if these unique ambient threads dither and fade away—or do they continue to push through our universe to some outer realm we’re not aware of? Would this be where the “meditation” factor resides and finds solace? Too many questions and very few answers.

With various tracks ranging from two minutes to full-scale 25-minute ambient galaxies, the space between each trajectory dips between arcane timbres and saccharine textures that could drift for an eternity. If the intention was to create distance and sounds for empty spaces, then the Clan Analogue team has succeeded with these atmospherically dense dronescapes.
