IDM and braindance are alive and well

Tracing in the footsteps of legendary electronic labels like Rephlex and Warp, UK-based Xephem Records delivers their latest compilation titled Compiler – Level 2. Featuring burgeoning IDM producers and braindance veterans from all over Europe, this high-energy compilation simply never has a mundane moment.

The opening track “ntableaux” by Mause kicks things off with a nostalgic chip-tune type melody which is interwoven with glitched drums and heavily edited percussion elements. The next track “Orbital Exentricity” by Repeat Eater (aka Stazma the Junglechrist) is an experimental acid tune that hoists chunky TB-303 bass lines. “Pickled Wrinkle” by Caltha is one the focal points of the record, with its elegant intelligent techno sensibilities. “sad_Jungle” by ®adår is another one to check out—pushing a plethora of juggled amen breaks to keep your feet shuffling and head spinning.

Moving forward there are more acid, electro, breakbeat style contributions from Dr. Doctor, Eggshell Goblin, and Tysk Raider. “Oberheim.AnalogAX” by fxbip and “Flid” by Beathaven are also two highlights as well. A firm reminder that IDM and braindance are alive and well, these tracks could be played at a rave or in your living room with equal gratification. A must listen for fans of Mike Paradinas, Tom Jenkinson, and of course Richard D. James.
