While every label out there try’s to make their presence known to the world, there is always a fingerprint left from those who actually make a difference. Case in point, the Record Camp. With their online e’zine covering the full electronic spectrum and having been a “collective” since 2000, Brooklyn’s Record Camp are an obvious influence in the scene and have now channeled their passion into the Brooklyn Keeps on Takin’ It CD compilation (a collection of talented New York based producers). The husband and wife team of Adesh Deosaran and Lara Wiesenthal along with their friend, Dan Ambrose are the key members of Record Camp and their “sound” is one that is fueled with broken beats interacting with melody driven rhythms and precise electronic beauty. With artwork from ex-the Designers Republic artist Michael C. Place (Build), this compilation contains both a visual and audible signature. Featuring tracks by Sulako, Sky Tucker, Heat Sensor, Celine, Datach’i, David Michael, Mercenaries, SanSerac, Satellite Beach, Balloons, Secret Agent Gel, nkH, and Galvanized.

From the tangled Adult. influenced electro of Galvanized’s “Lovergirl” to Secret Agent Gell’s Skam infested “Potato Phase,” and Sulako’s excellent instrumental beat driven funk on “Lilac,” there’s an active feel to each of these cuts. Heat Sensor’s “Tilt” manages to morph into distorted ambience while a chilled out percussive groove keeps everything intact. Some gems sparkle in more ways than others, however. Tracks like Nate Harrison’s “Hiatus” (operating under the nkH guise) and Sky Tucker’s “Kronic” will surely bring this CD the recognition it deserves with their rhythmic downbeat electro manifestations.

One thing is for sure –Record Camp have their ears in the right place. The range of styles represented on their 2nd release shows us that IDM is not dead. In fact, the music keeps rolling in, the beats keep churning out and the rhythms must be heard to be appreciated. Record Camp isn’t just another label, they’re one to contend with on an international level. (Also look out for Sky Tucker’s debut 12″ EP with Record Camp called Pressing Matters)..
