At The Psychedelic Circus :: Psychedelic Motel (Shipwrec)

Somewhere between early-era The Orb, The Future Sound Of London, and Legion Of Green Men you’ll find this transportive musical sprawl—a breakaway from the norms of everyday experimental electronics. Psychedelic Motel is a place where peculiar bits and bytes are melded to organic instruments with modular, Subotnick-like detail.

Utrecht-based duo At The Psychedelic Circus are new to these ears, but what they’ve presented on the Psychedelic Motel is a 7-track fuzzy concoction of electrical bliss that shouldn’t slide under the radar, especially considering this is their sophomore release with Shipwrec. Here we are treated to a dizzying sonic array that dips into downbeat motifs and enriched drums (“Down Under”), chill, and dub-infused kaleidoscope rhythms as featured on “Changes” and “A Damn Fine Night.” Thickened bass thuds and dub spheres ravish “Pure” quite unsuspectingly—the low-end echoes meant for a 3am abandoned warehouse gathering.

Gravitating towards classic synthesizer layering and eerie atmospherics, the duo create an ebb and flow of their own especially evidenced on tracks like “El Vista,” “NDSM,” and “Samsara.”

A surreal mixture that collapses elements of dub, lounge, and leftfield tribal elements, At The Psychedelic Circus raises the bar for challenging, gauzy, and thought provoking electronic listening music.

Psychedelic Motel is available on Shipwrec. [iTunes, Boomkat, Beatport]
