424 image 1And here it is, the highly anticipated 2CD compilation of Aphex Twin Remixes. Released March 25th, 2003, 26 Mixes for Cash is exactly just that; 26 mixes. Encompassing 10 years of always evolving, unpredictable Aphex Twin sounds, Richard D. James has played a key role in the “IDM” world and continues to be an inspiration even today. While there are obvious low-points throughout an artists career, it’s safe to say that most content from RDJ is direct from the heart and always manages to somehow stay on the top-shelf of many avid fans and casual listeners. From disjointed almost mainstream remixes to rave, techno, acid, ambience and experimental oddities, RDJ can never really be pigeonholed into one particular style.

With the latest gatefold 2CD on one of the worlds leaders of abstract electronic music, Warp Records have culled 26 remixes from Aphex Twin (including a couple of unreleased tunes) that should have the trainspotter/collector twitching. With such a collection of remixes, one has to wonder how RDJ approaches the artists he’s remixed, or how they approached him. Well, the Aphex Twin approach is more like ‘fixes’. Whereas a selection of cuts he feels need the remix treatment are in turn fixed to his approval. Interesting isn’t it?

26 Mixes for Cash and its metallic silver outer shell displays the precision of tracks that might not have been available anywhere in one lump package. With such a mixture of remixes including Seefeel, Gentle People, Kinesthesia, Philip Glass, Jesus Jones, Saint Etienne, Nine Inch Nails, Nobukazu Takemura, Curve, Baby Ford, Meat Beat Manifesto, DMX Krew and a host of others, 26 Mixes for Cash has its ups and downs, but generally flows into abstract electronic territory. Mark another one off for this pioneering left-field techno maverick, Richard D. James cashes in on a lovely collection of musical gems. With each track having its own particular attraction, 26 Mixes… should spark the interest of a wide audience, quite easily.

26 Mixes for Cash is out now on Warp Records.
