Andrey Kiritchenko :: Maria (Touched Music)

A truly magnificent and exquisite illustration of influential electronics for the year 2024.

This album exudes a certain enchantment. Perhaps the best way to characterize Andrey Kiritchenko’s path on Maria—a fourteen-track album filled with melodic and rhythmic marvels—is to call these “imaginative sonic fables,” as one Bandcamp user described it. These audio Polaroids combine experimental electronic contortions with instrumental soundscapes, evoking memories of Plaid and The Secret Frequency Crew from yesteryear. Creating otherworldly music with hundreds of found sounds, rhythmic patterns, tones, and percussion, Kiritchenko’s music is lively and occasionally unrelenting (“Black Beast” and “Blue Ox”).

Tracks like “Monkey Riding A Four-Headed Beast” and “Tiger Laughs” are euphoric, time-traveling ambient electronica pieces that are intensely emotional and incredibly affecting. While Maria occasionally radiates an overwhelming sense of optimism, the songs are laced with upbeat, robust mid-1990s electronica and has a heartbeat that never stops (reference “Autumn Is Riding On Horseback”). A truly magnificent and exquisite illustration of influential electronics for the year 2024.
