With best intentions—no seat belt is required with this release, instead allow yourself to free fall at the speed and in the direction A Typo I Feed Iris Noll has meticulously premeditated in this influentially inspired piece that has more than enough legs to stand next to the giants before him.
Balancing nostalgia with forward-thinking composition
Seamlessly patching organic matter into eclectic electronic worlds is Shaun Phillips (aka A Typo I Feed Iris Noll) with his return on Schematic titled bleeddreams. Although the past year may seem a bit of a blur, building on top of his prior debut release Accumulating Intangibles (Schematic, January 2021), these new offerings sound well prepared. This can mainly be noted to the overall pacing of the tracks as well as the order they come through on this release.
Opening with “Bleedthru,” this ambient excursion is above your standard procedure to an album opener. There is a certain dazzling complexity that flows between euphoric to psychedelic, whilst descending gracefully from outer space to under the deep blue. A clear indication our journey throughout will cover vast soundscapes and analogue environments. Jumping into the beat-driven start-up of “Lunar Reunion,” we can hear the back-catalogue of influences that comes from being a part of the Schematic family. Shaun entices us further with development within his sound design proving he can balance nostalgia with forward-thinking composition; as throughout we can also hear certain nods to early Warp, Merck and Skam too—all without stepping on his predecessors toes. Let’s hope the steady release stream will gain traction for a live show. As other standout tracks “Loophole” and “Everyday, Everything Makes a Zebra” would be triumphed in a darkened club.
What I can appreciate about bleeddreams and perhaps Shaun’s work collectively, is its accessibility to the experimental electronic genre. Without smearing any integrity, it is an encouraging listen for new listeners and future sound designers who may very well reference his work in their opus ones.
