Nostalgic, soothing, uplifting, and dreamlike electronic music for the soul—Boards of Canada can continue to keep us waiting (patiently?) while 4T Thieves simply takes us away.
Liminal Space—defined as a transitional or transformative space and often a waiting area between one point in time and space and the next—is an enriched 10-track album to close out this crazy year as the prolific Finland-based 4T Thieves continues to explore autumnal landscapes. And with each piece on Liminal Space packed to the gills with lo-fi / 80s-inspired synthesizers slicing through the haze, the album emerges as a highlight that should not be ignored. Fuzzy soundscapes, disjointed melodies and cryptic samples aplenty, these uplifting and subdued tunes and drifting tones merge with distant memories with ease—a soundtrack to times gone by and looking forward. Chilled and kaleidoscope soundscapes flicker about with ease—carefully teasing at what lies just beneath the plethora of downtempo beats and crunchy static clicks in a beautiful place out in the country. Dancing about in one’s own mind, 4T Thieves is able to at once illicit utter sonic beauty and a carefree attitude throughout these 54 blissful minutes.
Aptly transporting the listener through ephemeral and often atmospheric layers via cascading instrumentals, there are faint memories that flash into and out of focus as this album pushes ahead. An astounding release that I’m sure we’ll be talking about 20 years from now as a classic in its own right. And don’t forget, music has the right to transform us too. Liminal Space is simply the vehicle for that traverse.
