A very English children’s story about death: Difficult Art & Music present A.C. Fayler‘s novel and an accompanying electronic OST by Near Minerals. Kickstarter campaign.
A storybook descent into darkness
Described as ‘a very English children’s story about death,’ The Talking Castle is reminiscent of classic kids book about a group of siblings going on some holiday adventure — only this time with a much darker outcome. We were blown away by the weird framing of the book — a sometimes jarring blend of child-like wonder and complex, abstract language, of mysterious adventures and bleak social commentary. It’s something akin Enid Blyton writing Lord of the Flies via H.P. Lovecraft, with a dose of beat-poetry thrown in.
The novel has been deeply pondered over and interpreted by the minimal synth duo Near Minerals, who have crafted a beguiling and sinister soundtrack for the text. Its a stunning composition, that builds upon the atmospheric repetition of the the book, wielding mechanical sound-design and complex textures, offset against playful, proto-techno arpeggios.
DAAM launched a kickstarter campaign to produce the book and vinyl soundtrack, with loads of fantastic rewards, discounts, and exclusive goodies. DAAM would be honored if you’d take a moment to check it out!
