Kurt Y. Gödel :: Chord Rememory (YUYAY)

I’m always curious to see who labels call in on remix duty, especially imprints that are quite new. By my reckoning, anyone heading for Hyboid, Astro Chicken boss, for a track remake knows the score when it comes to electronic music. And it’s to the analogue pop aficionado that YUYAY have turned to open their second vinyl release.

And, in Hyboid form, the German artist delivers a cracking track. Throwing ice water on his trademark warm tones, a clinical edged piece of computer funk is the offering. YUYAY veteran Robyrt Hecht follows, darkening sounds and extending shadows without venturing into too sinister a territory. It becomes clear that the original track by Kurt Y. Gödel isn’t on the 12”, having been released as a digital album a few years back. Instead Gödel offers two new pieces. “Execute”, with its lofty synths, bleepy vocals and staccato snares is a Kraftwerk inspired treat but it’s the reduced loneliness of “Memory Loss” that really catches the ear. Stark ambience, bitter echoes and faded decay in a heartwrenching work. And that is the unique quality of this record; what appears to be an electro record is, well, not. Milium debuts, his first released track, with a hard hitting interpretation. Drums are split and heavy, a weaving almost dub techno undercurrent runs throughout in a piece that refuses to stick to one style. Interestingly, CCO, of Lux Rec fame, follows a similarly dubby line with the finale rework. Strong beats, a warble of acid bass, and watery chords culminate in his smoke filled Echoic Memory version.

I was impressed by YAYUY’s first vinyl outing. I’m even more impressed by Chord Rememory. Not taking anything away from Endomorphism, Chord Rememory is a rich cross section of what YAYUY is about. From established artist to new names, the record gives a different angle on canon of electro; something, as you’ll know, that is very difficult to do.

Chord Rememory is available YUYAY.
