Cathode Ray Tube :: Urban Patterning (Component)

Cathode Ray Tube is a multifaceted synthscaping electronic music project formed by Igloo’s own Charles R. Terhune. Before to go into this new EP I made a quick exploration on previous releases offered by this project. Two other albums have been published by Component as digital releases. The music encompasses a large spectrum of electronic music tendencies, from abstract ambient, to noisy drones and more groovy, advanced beat driven electronic shapes. An interesting mix of elements, schemes and rhythms for composite musical ambiences.

Urban Patterning reveals a more industrial-experimental inflected direction with remix support by Zyxt, Ukuphambana, Alpturer, Maduro, and Pattern Behavior. The more lugubrious and enigmatic dimensions of the music implicitly and conceptually refer to the idea of Urbanized isolationism, to the anguish qualities, eclecticism and challenges of our post-modern era. Consequently, and regarding the style, the musical pieces are rather plural, complex and inclusive. This album is a vast array of musical references with a constant taste for retro-cosmicadelic chills. The opening theme starts with a psychedelic cinematic sounding electronic composition with moving arpeggios and blissed out synth lines, somewhere between vintage soundtracks from the eighties, Tangerine Dream, Bernd Kistenmacher and other Berliners from the kosmische edge as well as more modern pulsating inclinations. Like many other tracks “A Close Second” cultivates once more this vintage retro electronic soul with abundant electro grooves, weird disco trance with a sci-fi tendency like you can find in Carpenter’s soundtracks or even in Cellutron & The Invisible, Mort Garson et al. “Gogolak 2” is my favorite piece here: a shadowy, sinister, menacing but cool and punchy hypnagogic electro hymn with a catchy eighty feeling. A bad-ass track.
