Ultradyne :: Resurrection :: Return from the Abyss (Pi Gao Movement)

Around Madrid, at the moment, you might well see Ultradyne in bold text. The electro veterans are set for a European Tour and the Spanish capital is preparing itself for a deluge of raw machine sounds. But before the duo of Dennis Richardson and Frank De Groodt set sail for the Iberian peninsula a new 12” is fresh from pressing plants and ready to infect speakers.

Resurrection :: Return from the Abyss continues on from Catharsis with a quartet of corrosive cuts. “Return from the Edge” is a filth lacquered encounter. Brightness is obliterated. Cold and trembling chords are further punished by crushing snare rolls. Jagged metal pulled across tortured bars as distortion gives way to desperation. “V1014” keeps the haunting undercurrents of “Return from the Edge,” bleeps ghosting into the middle distance with just a touch of warmth to thaw the chill. That faint comfort is erased by the coarse grains of “More Like You (MDK Therapy.)” Frost covers all, metal gleaming with ice as grey clouds loom over a forgotten industrial landscape. The last instalment is arguably the least ferocious, but that doesn’t mean sunshine and rainbows. Tempos are lowered but pain is omnipresent. Thump and ball bearing ping is fogged in stuttering vocals for the grim social commentary of “World Made Straight.”

Ultradyne are masters of meat locker electronics. You might think that they might have mellowed over the years but they’ve gotten even harder edged with age: slabs of sound hanging from analogue hooks. This is crumbling society electro, hunger in your belly electro, horrors of our age electro. Uncompromising and cruelly cold, Resurrection :: Return from the Abyss is an EP of boiled brutalism. A fist in the throat from the founding fathers.

Resurrection :: Return from the Abyss is available on Pi Gao Movement.
