V/A :: Riviera Disco (Bordello A Parigi )

Some tracks are characterized by innocence, early and naive and needing that bit more. Other pieces are much more developed, fully thought out and a well worthy successors of past pioneers.

I seem to be repeating myself. In general. But more specifically my tautology is centered around how productive labels have been in 2014. Perhaps it’s a sign that the recession is coming to an end, but then again it could be a sign of near anything. Bordello A Parigi is adding to its already growing catalog with a new compilation series seeking to map contemporary interpretations Spaghetti Dance and Disco tinted Electro. The first two volumes have just landed with eight artists, and tracks, to introduce Riviera Disco.

Dilemma, aka Bijou, and “Il Buffone” I had come across before hearing the 12“, the track having featured on Flemming Dalum’s Italoween mix. When I first heard “Il Buffone” I thought it was Kid Machine to be honest, it’s considered pace and cascading arpeggios ring with the hand of the Manchester man. A moody and uplifting opener. The plodding playfulness of DJ GIO MC-505 follows before the late night smoothness of Disco Sigaretta arrives with “479.” The good humored loops of Disko Selectors close this outing

Bijou sits at the head of Vol 2. Ken Dutrieue had been very quiet for years but offers a textured piece of shifting Electro. Lush bars cascade as beats snap for Bijou’s return. Summer joviality arrives with De Pin Up Club but maturity comes with Peet Need and “Here Comes The Arps.” A complex, fantastical and emotive work is presented. Melodies and harmonies interweave, lilting moments met by exalted breaks for track of pure quality. The final installment comes from Impresa Gottardo, a contemporary twist on Italo.

This vinyl twosome are 2014 reflections of an 80s music movement, that of Spaghetti Dance and its offshoots. Just like those burgeoning sounds of Rimini, Riviera Disco has different outcomes. Some tracks are characterized by innocence, early and naive and needing that bit more. Other pieces are much more developed, fully thought out and a well worthy successors of past pioneers.
